Fluency for Imaging is now Jacobian: your options

Fluency for Imaging became Jacobian in 2025. What the rebrand means for radiology departments, and whether you still need the full platform or just dictation.

By The RadMyk team

M*Modal Fluency for Imaging has a new name. Smart Reporting acquired the product from Solventum in 2025 and rebranded the combined company as Jacobian, headquartered in Munich and Pittsburgh. The acquisition closed in May 2026. Fluency for Imaging’s installed base, which processes over 80 million exams per year, now runs under the Jacobian brand. The product still holds its Best in KLAS ranking for Front-End Imaging Speech, five consecutive years as of 2026.

For radiology departments currently on Fluency for Imaging, the practical question is direct: does the rebrand change anything about your workflow, your contract, or the stability of the product? And if you were already evaluating alternatives, does this accelerate that decision?

What changed when Fluency became Jacobian?

The acquisition combined Smart Reporting’s standardized, guideline-based reporting with Fluency for Imaging’s speech recognition engine. Jacobian’s stated goal is a unified platform: one product that handles speech, AI-drafted impressions, structured output, and clinical data validation for radiology departments. The marketing framing is “diagnostic reporting at scale,” and that ambition fits the enterprise market the product has always served.

From an end-user perspective, the dictation interface and PACS and RIS integrations your IT team configured have not been replaced overnight. Post-acquisition integration of two codebases takes time, and Jacobian confirmed the technical integration was underway in 2026. What your radiologists see on the workstation in October 2026 still looks like Fluency for Imaging, even if the company behind it now calls itself Jacobian.

What has changed is ownership. Solventum no longer holds the product. For departments with multi-year enterprise contracts, the practical effect depends on how those contracts were written and what your account team has communicated. If you have not had that conversation yet, now is the right time.

The Jacobian rebrand is also the second ownership event for this product in two years. Solventum was itself a 2024 spinoff from 3M Health Information Systems, which acquired M*Modal in 2018. Some IT and procurement teams treat two consecutive ownership transitions as a vendor-risk signal. That concern is legitimate and worth factoring into any renewal or new contract negotiation, regardless of how the product has performed.

Who should stay with Jacobian?

Jacobian is still the right choice for the same departments Fluency for Imaging was right for: large radiology operations that need a managed reporting platform. The feature set that made Fluency for Imaging a perennial KLAS leader is intact: speech recognition tuned on radiology vocabulary, CAPD nudges that flag laterality conflicts and gender mismatches before sign-off, peer review workflows, actionable findings management, PACS and RIS interoperability, and central IT provisioning.

If your department depends on those workflow layers, Jacobian delivers them. What the acquisition adds, over time, is Smart Reporting’s structured reporting depth - more AI-assisted, computable, searchable output. For departments that want that roadmap, the merger is a positive development.

The key word is “need.” Not every radiologist in a department on Jacobian uses the workflow platform features. Some dictate their reports, sign off, and move on. The CAPD alerts and peer review module exist in their environment but play no role in their daily work. For that group, a platform transition is worth examining from the other direction: are you paying for an enterprise platform when what the individual radiologist actually needs is high-accuracy dictation that works in any app?

That question is not a criticism of Jacobian. It is a recognition that enterprise radiology platforms and individual dictation tools solve different problems.

What the transition means for PowerScribe 360 departments too

If your department runs both Fluency for Imaging and PowerScribe 360, you already know that PowerScribe 360 reached end-of-support on August 31, 2026. That milestone means two concurrent platform decisions for some departments. Nuance is pushing 360 customers toward PowerScribe One (cloud subscription), and Jacobian is integrating Fluency into its new combined product. Both transitions involve contract negotiations, IT planning, and timeline pressure.

Departments facing both transitions simultaneously have more reason than usual to think carefully about what radiologists actually need at the workstation level, versus what the institution needs at the workflow and compliance layer. Those are separate questions with potentially separate answers.

What if you just need dictation?

RadMyk is on-device medical dictation built for radiologists who want to own their dictation tool, not rent platform access. It runs locally on Mac (Apple Silicon, M1 or newer) and Windows. The speech model is tuned on radiology language: anatomy, modalities, laterality, and the cadence of structured reports. It measures 96.1% word accuracy out of the box and transcribes at approximately 220 words per minute.

The architecture is different from a cloud platform. RadMyk types at the cursor in whatever app is focused. PACS report fields, RIS text boxes, EHR notes, browser-based reporting tools, Citrix and remote desktop sessions: anywhere you can type, you can speak. There is no PACS integration project and no vendor portal for your IT team to manage. A radiologist installs it in a few minutes and dictates from the first session.

On privacy: voice never leaves the machine. There is no cloud round-trip and no audio sent to a vendor server. That architecture keeps patient audio in the reading room, which matters during periods when vendor relationships are in transition.

On pricing: RadMyk costs $199 one-time for the first 100 users (Rs 14,999 in India), rising after that launch period. There is no subscription, no annual renewal, and no per-report fee. The one-time payment is the permanent cost of owning the software. See current pricing at radmyk.com/pricing.

Where Jacobian genuinely wins

Jacobian is not going away. It is a mature, deeply integrated enterprise product with a Best in KLAS recognition streak and over 80 million exams per year. For any department that needs structured reporting, CAPD clinical decision support, peer review, or findings management, Jacobian is the right evaluation. RadMyk does not offer those features and is not trying to.

The honest framing: Jacobian and RadMyk are not direct competitors. Jacobian is a radiology workflow platform that includes speech recognition. RadMyk is a dictation tool that runs on top of any workflow. A department buying Jacobian is making a different purchase than a radiologist buying RadMyk. Both decisions can be right depending on what each party actually needs.

The comparison becomes relevant when individual radiologists on an enterprise platform evaluate whether they also want a personal dictation tool they control, or when a department decides some radiologists need platform access and others just need clean dictation.

If the Jacobian transition has prompted a broader evaluation of radiology dictation options, a few posts lay out the full landscape:

How to evaluate

If your department is on Jacobian and the product is working well, there is no immediate action required. Platform transitions take time, and Jacobian has an established user base and a clear product roadmap.

If the rebrand has prompted you to evaluate alternatives, either at the department level or for individual radiologists who want something portable and self-managed, the right starting point is a 28-day free trial on RadMyk. No credit card. No email required. You run it alongside your existing setup in any PACS or reporting environment you use, and the accuracy either works for your workflow or it does not.

Radiology trainees can use RadMyk free for the full length of their training, with no countdown and no card. Start at radmyk.com.
